ISM Non-Manufacturing Index Reaches Highest Level Since February 2011
The ISM Non-manufacturing Survey increased from 53.0 in December to 56.8 in January. That is the strongest level since February 2011. The Briefing.com consensus expected the ISM Non-manufacturing Index to increase to 53.1.
New orders accelerated from 54.6 in December to 59.4 in January. At the same time, the contraction in order backlogs slowed as the index increased from 45.5 to 49.5.
Altogether, the strengthening in orders led to a 3.6 point increase in business activities, from 55.9 in December to 59.5 in January.
The employment index increased from 49.8 in December to 57.4 in January. That move mirrored the results in the January Employment Situation Report released this morning.
